The Modern IR Shadi Awwad, Senior Solutions Manager, Elsevier What have you heard about Digital Commons? Shadi Awwad, Senior Solutions Manager, Elsevier Middle East, Turkey, Central Asia, SE Europe

Do you have an institutional repository Do you have an institutional repository? What does the next generation IR look like? What do you want your IR to do for you? The IR Vision Where do I want to begin? What do I see as more important? What does the modern repository do? The is is a service or a tool…what does that service do beyond make things more visible?

Vision for the role of the IR The modern repository helps by serving core institutional needs. “….demonstrate to the world the importance of what you are doing and what your contributions are.” -Dr. Anne Marie Casey, Library Dean, Embry-Riddle University Visibility What is the institutional need being expressed by Dr. Casey? By demonstrating your contribution you are reputation building Reputation Culture & Language Discoverability Inter-Operability Open-Access Initiatives Full-Spectrum of Outputs

Question #1 Can your IR compete for your faculty member’s attention against ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and other solutions? Getting contributions is key and your faculty are most important so let’s begin with them. If this feels like an impossible first hurdle, you could also ask the question “Are faculty aware that we have a repository and services to make their works more visible?” If you can answer in the affirmative, you are on the right path

For University of Nebraska Lincoln, greater visibility is key and the library celebrates having the most popular campus domain They are pretty proud that they are #1 and share the news widely. Are you proud of your results? If yes, you are on the right path to a modern IR 10/17/2019

University of Pennsylvania's IR bests ResearchGate and Academia.edu Where do you post the scholarly works that you create or manage? The IR Personal (web site)-11% ScholarWorks (Digital Commons)-11% ResearchGate-10% Institutional/department (web site)-10% Academia.edu-9% Lab/group (web site)-6% Pubmed-6% n=475 responses from faculty from University of Pennsylvania survey conducted 02/08/2018; https://osf.io/u3rk2/ Can the IR compete with other places that could serve your faculty? If yes, then you are on the right path. More than 50% of faculty surveyed are aware of the IR https://beprexit.wordpress.com/2018/08/02/survey-results-reports/

Question #2 Is your IR a home for the most important research and institutional collections? If not, why not? Every school has some special collection Every school has faculty who have some unique collection of primary research materials that would do well to be made more visible for the sake of the faculty member, her center, the institute, the department, the students who collaborated on the work and the larger institution…do you get these collections? If you can answer in the affirmative, you are on the right path to a modern IR

Most Popular Items Not Typically Green OA articles Purdue “other” are technical reports. Upenn “other” are think tank reports.

Question #3 Does your IR program advance university initiatives? Do you think it has had an impact on one or more of the core needs on campus? If you can answer in the affirmative, you are on the right path to a modern IR Does it impact things that matter?

Texas A&M Law IR contributing to meteoric jump in rankings and prestige Texas A&M Law School jumps 38 spots in one year. The school found that it had to work on visibility of its faculty scholarship to compete for high-level faculty in the recruitment process. Susan Phillips, Professor of Law and Director of the Dee J. shared that “there were many pieces of the puzzle, and Digital Commons was certainly one of them.”

Question #4 Is your IR a marketing tool for the university?

Richmond University highlights research impact (from the IR) on department web pages Here we see department Web site home pages which highlight the world-wide audience interested in their faculty research output—something made possible with a modern IR. Perhaps embedding this IR widget into the department web site signal something about the interest that exists for the faculty expertise. Why would Richmond put this on their Web site which is a key marketing vehicle? Why do institutions market? Perhaps to encourage students to attend, other faculty to join or pick their faculty for a collaboration?

What Kind of IR Should I have? Hosted vs In-House? What is the Total Cost of Ownership? Which solution best addresses the institutional vision? What is the best way to serve my users? References: UNESCO Report - Institutional Repository Software Comparison What Kind of IR Should I have?
