Technology Evaluation Task Tell us about your progress in the last week. What maths software, app or website are you intending to review?

Learning Intent: Explore how topics in mathematics could be planned. Examine the important information that needs to considered when topic planning.

Success Criteria: Suggest ways that topic planning can be implemented in mathematics. Discuss the important information that must be considered when topic planning.

Topic Planning. There are many considerations when planning a topic in maths. These could include: Topic or Theme Key concepts Prior knowledge Victorian Curriculum F-10 levels Learning styles Assessment

Topic Planning. Topic or Theme: Ideally this would link in with other work that you are doing in your classroom. For example: Maths & the Olympics Gold Australian Animals Mini-beasts Dinosaurs Australia’s past Space Healthy foods

Topic Planning. Key concepts: Ideally, for the chosen theme, you are able to identify 3-4 key concepts or ideas. For example for the theme Maths & the Olympics, we might decide that the key concepts we wish to choose are: Addition & Subtraction of decimals Multiplication of decimals The calculation of an average Diving as an Olympic sport could be used as one activity to study these key concepts.

Topic Planning. Prior knowledge: How are we going to determine what prior knowledge students have. This could be through a brief piece of work or it could be determined through recent testing. Victorian Curriculum levels & statements: What Victorian Curriculum standards will be covered through the topic of work. These should be both in the discipline area of Mathematics and through general capabilities. It is important that these Victorian Curriculum standards are covered through some type of assessment.

Topic Planning. Look at the example of topic planning. Note how it is organised so that any teacher could use it as the basis of a topic. This document contains examples of activities as well as leaving some skill development lessons that could be used in different ways depending on the skills that the students have demonstrated in activity one.

Topic Planning. Learning Styles: As teachers, we should all know our students and how they learn best. This does not mean that we always give them work in their preferred learning style, but it does mean that we should give them some choices about how they learn and expose them to a wide variety of activities in various learning styles.

Topic Planning. Assessment: As teachers, we must assess students appropriately and accurately so that we know where they are at and what the next appropriate level of learning is for these students.

Topic Planning. Let’s consider the theme of Australian coins for a 1&2 composite class. In pairs, develop information on the following: Key concepts Prior knowledge Learning styles Assessment Victorian Curriculum F-10 statements: Recognise, describe and order Australian coins according to their value. Count and order small collections of Australian coins and notes according to their value.

Topic Planning. Currently you are studying the theme of space in your Grade 3 & 4 class. In pairs, Develop a plan that includes: Key concepts Victorian Curriculum F-10 statements Context Ideas for activities.

Success Criteria: Can You? Suggest ways that topic planning can be implemented in mathematics? Explain the important features of a mathematics topic plan.
