1 2017 - Semester One Introduction Lecturer - Peter Sellings
EDFGC5713 – Mathematics, Numeracy and Learner Engagement A Semester One Introduction Lecturer - Peter Sellings

2 Course Goal: This course will work with PST’s to develop competence and confidence in Mathematics enabling participants to facilitate learning in their classroom in a manner that allows learners to reach their full potential. Thinking and reasoning will be the focus of this course.

3 Expectations Attend Lectures and Tutorials
Actively participate in Lectures and Tutorials Communicate regarding any issues Submit assignment work

4 Learning Intentions To introduce PST’s to learning in Primary Mathematics. To explore how responses can be used to determine the next level of learning. To examine how differentiation can occur in classrooms. To link some of these practices to theory. Fist of five – A fist means that a student has little or no idea of the learning intentions and success criteria. Thumb means a sort of idea, thumb and index finger means some idea etc… up to five fingers showing meaning that it is very clear what the learning intentions and success criteria are.

5 Fist of Five How do you rate your Mathematical ability?
How positive was your school Mathematics education? Fist of five – A fist means that a student has little or no idea of the learning intentions and success criteria. Thumb means a sort of idea, thumb and index finger means some idea etc… up to five fingers showing meaning that it is very clear what the learning intentions and success criteria are.

6 Starter Look at the 9 dots. Draw 4 straight lines so that all dots are connected. No Backtracking Do not lift your pen off the paper

7 Course Structure Two Assignments Hurdle Task
Assignment 1 Research on a aspect of mathematical content Assignment 2 Lesson Planning Task

8 Activity 1: Group Work Look at the following student responses. Discuss as a group what learning you think this child needs to move forward. a) 3 – 5 = 8 b) 3 – 5 = 0 c) 3 – 5 = 2 d) 3 – 5 = 9

9 Activity 2: Ordering

10 Activity 2: Ordering Group Discussion:
How could this activity be used in a Foundation class? How could it be used in a grade 5 class?

11 Activity 3: Intro to Relational thinking
5 + 6 = 2 + ? 6 – 2 = ? – 4 How can these sums help us to think?
