Genesis: The Book of Beginnings Beginning: Humanity Beginning: Hebrews Four Events: Four People: Creation (1-2) Fall (3-5) Flood (6-9) Babel (10-11) Abraham (12-25) Isaac (25-27) Jacob (28-36) Joseph (37-50) c. 2,000 years c. 193 years

Abraham: Man of Faith The life of Abraham in Gen. 12- 25 is characterized as a life of faith (Rom. 4; Gal. 3; Heb. 11; Jas. 4) What is faith? Faith is ultimately surrender: “Get out” (Gen. 12:1; Acts 7:3)

Abraham’s Surrender 1. He surrendered his country and his kinship (Gen. 12:1-9) He got out and left to go 1,000 miles away (Heb. 11:8-16) We too must surrender our country (Phil. 3:20; 1 Pet. 2:11) and kinship (Mt. 10:35-37)

Abraham’s Surrender 2. He surrendered his own personal rights or desires (12:9 – 14:24; 18:22 – 19:38; 20; 23-24) He dealt with situations and issues not of his own choosing We too must surrender our rights (1 Cor. 8; Rom. 14; Phil. 2:4)

Abraham’s Surrender 3. He surrendered his own wisdom, judgment, and will (15:1 – 18:21; 21:1-34) He learned to trust God’s will over his own (Rom. 4:1-22) We too must surrender our will (Lk. 22:42; Jn. 7:17)

Abraham’s Surrender 4. He surrendered his own son (Gen. 22:1-24) He sacrificed what he loved and without hesitation (Heb. 11:17- 19; Jas. 2:21-24) We too must surrender our own (Lk. 9:23; 14:33; 1 Cor. 13:5)

The Christian’s Surrender Abraham is in God’s kingdom Why? He surrendered all! He had a surrendering faith! When we sing, “All to Jesus I surrender … I surrender all,” do we really mean it?

The Christian’Surrender “Abraham” means “father of a multitude”: we do his works (Jn. 8:39), we walk in his steps (Rom. 4:12), we are his seed (Gal. 3:29) Let us make Abraham’s surrender, our surrender
