Motor Vocabulary

Field Pole: a magnet whose poles remain fixed (unchanged) during the operation of the motor.

Armature: an electromagnet that turns on/off as it spins inside the Field.

Commutator: a “switch” that turns the armature on and off

Brushes: bring electrons to and from the armature.

Continuity: a continuous flow of electrons through a conductor.

Electromagnet: sometimes called a temporary magnet; can be turned on and off, poles can be reversed and can be strengthened.

Magnetic Field: created around a conductor when electrons flow through that conductor.
