ARCSS All Hands Workshop Seattle, WA February 20-23, 2002 WELCOME! Arctic System Science Program

Hallmarks of the original ARCSS                                           System science approach (USGCRP Project) Modest level of national/international partnerships Science Management Offices (SMOs) and Science Project Offices (SPOs) Science Steering Committees (SSC)                             Annual PI meetings for coordination, planning ARCSS Data Coordination Center (ADCC) ARCSS Committee (AC) led by ARCUS Annual meetings to identify integration opportunities All Hands Workshop in 1996 Arctic System Science Program

The Old Multidisciplinary ARCSS Components OAII – Ocean Atmosphere Ice Interactions: (NEW, IWA, AOS, SHEBA, SBI, SEARCH) LAII – Land Atmosphere Ice Interactions: (Flux, ITEX, ATLAS) Paleoenvironmental studies (GISP2, PALE, PARCS) HARC – Human dimensions of the Arctic system. RAISE – Russian American Initiative on Shelf-land Environments in the Arctic. Arctic System Science Program

. . . ARCSS Arctic System Arctic System Arctic System Arctic System Science Program Arctic System GOAL: Understanding the Arctic System as a system Arctic System It’s the Arctic System, stupid Arctic System Science Program

What ARCSS is not It is not the arctic climate program                                           It is not the arctic climate program It is not the arctic interdisciplinary program It is not the system science program It is not the arctic career funding program It generally is not the small project program It is not the fund anything that appears in a science plan program                             Arctic System Science Program

The Evolving ARCSS Planning Developing Focused Project(s) Developing Focused Project(s)                                                                                  Developing Focused Project Evolving into Multiagency project                             Focusing on Bio- Complexity in the Environment SEARCH-ASOF-CHAMP Solicitation NSF-02-071 Proposals due: 6/3 (Under Revision) Arctic System Science Program

Hallmarks of the Thematic ARCSS Coordinated, Interdisciplinary, Arctic system approach SSCs, SMOs, SPOs provide management: ~Annual coordination meetings, future planning, outreach, assist with data compliance, promote increasing national and international partnerships. ADCC serves as permanent data archive. UCAR Joint Office of Science Support (JOSS): Operational and/or project level data management; Transfer data into ADCC archive. AC promotes integration and outreach activities: Annual meetings of ARCSS leadership; All Hands Workshop in 2002.                                                                       Arctic System Science Program

How are ARCSS projects supported?                                           ARCSS works with SSCs and AC to identify large- scale science opportunities with ARCSS goals: - Solicitation is published by NSF that reflects advice given; - Proposals reviewed for meritorious science, outreach and potential for project synergy; - PIs of well-reviewed proposals meet to establish the synergy derived from coordination (i.e. sum is greater than the parts). About 10% of funds directed to unsolicited projects. Compliance with data policy and NSF outreach goals are heavily stressed if project is to continue Arctic System Science Program
