The Problems of DCF Estimation for human resources in sports Artem Tretiakov

Purpose of research Improving classic methods of DFC estimation and post-performance valuation for individual players in team sports. Development of problematics in sports management and interest in academic research among GCU students.

Grounds of interest There is no clear research that we have found on any major sport in U.S. that would indicate the dependence between profit, performance and amount of salaries paid to players and coaches. Low academic interest in this subject indicates that such questions might not be included in the problematic of the sport's business society of the U.S.

Needs of industry Managers in this field are not using all the tools available in order to be rational. They can become too focused on victories. Also, talented players tend to use their “monopoly” for negotiations on higher pay. Therefore, evidence on their expected performance is needed.

State of research During our studies we conducted an overview of literature and recent research in the professional team sports industry. As a result of our findings, problems for future research have been developed. Now we are looking for teammates and support from the university in order to start our research in one of the directions indicated below.

Problematics Eric Flamholtz pointed out that after the assessment of the value of a group, Human Resource Accounting researchers should work on methods of assessment of the individual contribution to the group. In our opinion, many teams today in professional sports are using the assessment of a group value.

Question 1 Is the total generated revenue dependent on the distribution of talents in the team? ? Method: Comparison and analysis of teams with even and uneven talent distributions. 20 10 20 10 20 40

Question 2 How is a portion of a revenue generated by a player dependent on the expected performance of teammates? Method: polling of the audience, analysis of performance.

Question 3 Is there a portion of a revenue from a game that is not generated by players? How to estimate it?

Question 4 Is there a portion of a game revenue that is generated by past events? Can the dynamics of such portion be described by the concept of the elasticity of demand? Method: polling audience, analysis of attendance.

Question 5 How to account for the general image of a player as perceived by fans?

Question 6 How to estimate the performance and contribution to revenue of players with different roles? Method: modeling, polling, expert opinion

Question 7 What is an efficient period of a forecast when dealing with the value of human assets in the case of estimation using DCF? Method: modeling, analysis of expert opinion.

Question 8 How can the association of the local community and new players affect future revenues? Method: polling, analysis of ticket sales.
