16th Annual City Tech Poster Session Radiation in its Origin: Health Risks Resulting from Prolonged Exposure to Radon Tetiana Grygoruk and Evans Lespinasse Department of Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging 16th Annual City Tech Poster Session Abstract Among non-smokers, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer, and the second cause of lung cancer overall, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Radon cannot be detected through one's sense of sight, smell, hearing, taste or touch. The only way to detect it is by testing certain spaces or environments with specialized instruments. This radioactive gas is present in trace quantities in the earth and produced by decaying uranium. It enters buildings through cracks in walls, floors, construction joints or gaps around service pipes, electrical wires and sump pits. It emits heavy nuclear fragments of alpha particles (two protons and two neutrons), that can enter the lungs and contribute radiation dose to occupants. It can be detected in homes, workplace, and schools etc. In this research, three (3) specific places where people gather frequently will be tested using a short-term radon test kit in Brooklyn, New York, including a home, school and office. Lab data from the three locations will be compared and analyzed for potential health risks. Experiment procedure Three charcoal-based radon tests listed under the EPA Radon Gas Measurement Proficiency Program were used for the research. The samplers were placed in different locations and levels for 48 hours in Brooklyn, NY. The results were processed and summed up by Alpha Energy Laboratories. Rad Tech perspectives on Radon Summary Based on this research, it was concluded that any exposure to radon gas can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. It also proved that radon level is elevated underground or basements, where it easily rises from the soil, rocks and well water. Even a low amount of 2.0 pCi/L is equivalent to 100 chest X-Rays per year. The National Cancer Institute estimates, that 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year are related to radon. The EPA generally recommends methods which prevent the entry of radon in homes. Soil suction, for example, prevents radon from entering the home by drawing radon from below the house and venting it through pipe/s, above the home where it is diluted. Future Perspectives: Research ways in which to minimize indoor radon levels. Norms and standards Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L), a measurement of radioactivity. According to EPA, In the United States, the average indoor radon level is about 1.3 pCi/L. The average outdoor level is about 0.4 pCi/L. The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend fixing homes with radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L. EPA also recommends that people think about fixing their homes for radon levels between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L
