Mathematical Challenges Years 1 and 2

Teaching Objectives Four pin bowling – Solve mathematical problems or puzzles. Know addition facts up to 10. Pick a pair - Solve mathematical problems or puzzles. Sum up - Solve mathematical problems or puzzles. Add three small numbers mentally. Birds’ eggs - Solve mathematical problems or puzzles. Fireworks - Solve mathematical problems or puzzles. Count on in steps of 3 or 4. Birthdays - Solve mathematical problems or puzzles. Use known number facts to add mentally. Carry out simple multiplication.

Four Pin Bowling Which pins must Joshua knock down to score exactly 5 ? Find 2 different ways : To score 5 To score 6 To score 7 1 3 4 2

How did you do ? Score 5 by knocking down 1 and 4 2 and 3

2 1 4 8 Pick a Pair Pick a pair of numbers. Add them together. Write the numbers and the answer. Keep doing this. How many different answers can you get ?

How many did you find ? 2 + 4 = 6 1 + 2 = 3 1 + 4 = 5 1 + 8 = 9 4 + 8 = 12 2 + 8 = 10

2 4 8 3 Sum Up Make these totals. You can only use each number once. 9 13 10 14 11 15 12

Did you get them all ? 9 = 12 = 10 = 13 = 11 = 14 = 15 = 2 + 3 + 4 9 = 12 = 10 = 13 = 11 = 14 = 15 = 2 + 3 + 4 4 + 8 2 + 8 2 + 3 + 8 2 + 4 + 8 3 + 8 3 + 4 + 8

Birds’ Eggs Three birds laid some eggs. Each bird laid an odd number of eggs. Altogether they laid 19 eggs. How many eggs did each bird lay ? You may need 19 counters

How many did you get ? 1 17 1 3 3 13 3 5 11 1 15 3 3 7 9 1 13 5 5 5 9 1 7 11 1 9 9 5 7 7

Fireworks « « « « « « « « « « Emma had some fireworks. Some made 4 stars. Some made 3 stars. Altogether her fireworks made 19 stars. How many made 3 stars ? Find 2 different answers. « « « « « « « « « «

How did you do ? 5 fireworks made 3 stars and 1 made 4 stars. 1 firework made 3 stars and 4 made 4 stars.

Birthdays Mum and Paul are talking about birthdays. They take Paul’s age and double it. Then they add 5. The answer is 35. Mum says this is her age. How old is Paul ?

double halve add subtract Paul is ………………… 15 Make up some more problems like this. Try to use some of these words: double halve add subtract
