WHAT IS A RÉSUMÉ? A short document that states relevant information regarding your education, skills, experiences, accomplishments, and job related interests. It is used to market yourself to employers, telling what skills you can bring to a particular company or organization so you will be considered for a job. List paid work experience in chronological order (most recent on top) Keep the date format consistent either 2010-2013 or January 2010-April 2013) List your job title below the business name in italics Include 2-4 bullet points for each job listing Résumé Coaching Workshop

Use action verbs to describe key tasks of what you did that relate to the job you are applying for Use past tense verbs for past jobs and present tense verbs for current positions Be specific with your examples and make sure they relate to the job you are applying to Focus on accomplishments from previous jobs rather than simply tasks Take notes under #6, complete #7 after presenter has finished slide. RÉSUMÉ FORMATTING Keep work experience in chronological order (most recent first) Try to fit in on one page – no more than two pages Use a clear font such as Times New Roman in size 10-12 with your name in 20-30 Use bold type or italics to highlight important information Have 1 inch margins on all sides Your résumé should be NEAT, PROFESSIONAL and EASY TO READ – you only have about 20 seconds to make a good impression Absolutely NO spelling or grammar errors! RÉSUMÉ WRITING GUIDELINES You must tell the truth – you will need to backup whatever you say on your résumé Do not use personal pronouns (I or me) Research the company (visit the website) to understand their core values Read the job description carefully so you can highlight your skills that relate to what they are looking for Include keywords in your résumé pulled from the job description Focus on your strengths Résumé Coaching Notes: Take notes under #15
