Year 4 Summer Term Voyages of Discovery

SUMMER TERM VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY Science - STEM 6. Explore STEM challenge cards 1.Describe Alexander Graham Bell and his inventions Present my findings about Alexander Graham Bell 5. Describe the properties of oxygen gas Explain how oxygen was discovered National Curriculum References To recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear in the context of Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone. To compare and group materials together according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases by exploring the discovery of oxygen. VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY SUMMER TERM Geography Describe and understand how the UK has changed over time 1.Name and locate the countries and cities of the UK Use the eight compass points to describe the location of the countries and cities of the UK 2. Name and locate the main rivers and seas of the UK Identify rivers and seas of the UK 6 Explain the importance of the Prime Meridian to London’s history 4. Name and locate areas of high ground in the UK Use a map or atlas to locate areas of high ground in the UK 5. Identify ways London has changed over time Discovery Homework: Children research the sign, symbol or flag for their own county. Why has it been chosen? What does each part represent? They then go on to think about what is important to them about where they live, and design a new flag or sign incorporating their ideas. National Curriculum References To name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and their identifying human and physical characteristics, key topographical features (including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers), and land-use patterns; and understand how some of these aspects have changed over time, ( in the context of maps of the UK.) To identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/ Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night), (in the context of London’s history.) 3.
