An indirect object expresses to whom or for whom an action is done An indirect object expresses to whom or for whom an action is done. In the example below, the indirect object answers this question: À qui parle Claire? (To whom does Claire speak?)

apporter à to bring rendre visite à to visit [someone] répondre à to respond to écouter à to listen to

The indirect object pronouns me and te become m’ and t’ before a verb beginning with a vowel sound. © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.

Indirect object pronouns replace indirect object nouns. © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.

The object pronoun goes BEFORE the INFINITIVE in a sentence when there is a conjugated verb followed by an infinitive. Example: Il va parler à toi. Il va te parler.

Placement of Object Pronouns Object pronouns go in two places in a sentence or question: Before a conjugated verb Example: Je te parle. Je ne te parle pas. b) Before an infinitive Example: Je vais te parler. Je ne vais pas te parler.

Example: Je n’écoute pas au prof. Je ne lui écoute pas. In a negative sentence, the ne…pas goes around the conjugated verb and the object pronoun goes before the infinitive. Example: Je n’écoute pas au prof. Je ne lui écoute pas. Nous n’aimons pas prêter à nos amis. Nous n’aimons pas leur prêter. © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.

Object pronouns in commands In an affirmative command, the object pronoun goes AFTER the verb and is preceded by a hyphen. Example: Donne-moi un bonbon! Envoyez-lui la lettre! In a negative command, the object pronoun goes before the conjugated verb. Example: Ne me donne pas de bonbon! Ne lui envoyez pas la lettre!

DISJUNCTIVE PRONOUNS Disjunctive Pronouns: NOT the subject. Can be used alone.  Moi! (Me!) Or in phrases without a verb.  Eux aussi? (Them too?) © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.

Moi, je porte souvent une casquette. Me, I often wear a cap. Disjunctive pronouns can be used to emphasize the person to which they refer. Moi, je porte souvent une casquette. Me, I often wear a cap. Mon frère, lui, déteste les casquettes. My brother, [on the other hand] he hates caps. © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.

Disjunctive Pronouns moi nous toi vous lui / elle eux / elles To say myself, ourselves, etc. add –même(s) after the disjuctive pronoun. Tu fais ça toi-même? You are doing that yourself? Ils organisent la fête eux-mêmes. They are organizing the party themselves.
