Judea - Judaea - Judean Wilderness

Jerusalem is located West of the upper part of the dead sea. Bethlehem lies six miles to the South. Bethany two miles to the East. Jericho just fifteen miles Northeast of Jerusalem.

Gospel in Geography Luke 1:65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

Gospel in Geography Mark 1:5 Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

Gospel in Geography Luke 4:1-2 1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

Gospel in Geography Wilderness of Judea Refers to the rugged area along the Dead Sea Where the land plunges from the peaks of the central range of mountains to the shores of the sea Filled with deep ravines and caves Jesus was probably led into this region after He was baptized to be tempted

Gospel in Geography Matthew 3:1-3 1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Gospel in Geography Isaiah 40:3 (NKJV) 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.

Nahal Darga The Nahal Darga is the largest wadi in the northern Judean desert, and it is one of the five largest in the entire Judean desert. It is 27 miles long and drains about 89 sq. mi. The Nahal Darga is up to 650 feet deep. Wadi (Arabic: also: Vadi) is the Arabic term traditionally referring to a valley.

Wadi in Negev, Israel. NEGEV "the negev" or simply, neghebh, from a root meaning "to be dry," and therefore in the first instance implying the "dry" or "parched regions," hence, in the Septuagint it is usually translated eremos, "desert," also nageb):

Judea was part of the Hill Country though it contained four other regions, The coastal plain, the Shephelah (lowlands near the coast), the Negev (southland), and the wilderness. The hill country was a rough stony land with deep ravines rising 2500 feet to the open plateau where Jerusalem sat. The wilderness was a bleak barren region where the Judean mountains on the east side slope down 4000 feet to the earth's lowest land trench, the Dead Sea region, which was about 1300 feet below sea-level. In New Testament times the Dead Sea Region was the area where, at Qumran, the Essene scribes had gathered or written the Dead Sea Scrolls and established a devout and separated community.

Place of Refuge Because of its lack of water and good routes, the Judean wilderness has been (mostly) uninhabited throughout history. Consequently it was an ideal place for those seeking refuge from enemies or retreat from the world. When on the run from King Saul, David hid in various places in the Judean wilderness (the Wilderness’s) of Ziph, Maon, and En Gedi are part of the Judean Wilderness). John the Baptist preached here, and it seems likely that this was the wilderness where Jesus was tempted. Herod the Great built two fortresses (Herodium and Masada) in this area for protection should his people ever revolt against him.

Hebron: The name means: “Friend” Abraham dwelt here in the plain of Mamre (Gen 13:18) and bought the cave of Machpelah as a burial place (Gen 23:19) and then given to Caleb (Josh 14:13)on
