Sychar: A town of Samaria in the vicinity of the land given by Jacob (John 4:5; Gen 48:22) Shechem: At Shechem (sometimes identified with Sychar). Jesus visited the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well (John 4). Often these two towns are considered to be the same town.

Sychar Jacob’s Well

Located between Mt Gerizim (left) and Mt Ebal (right), Shechem is preeminent in the biblical record beginning with God’s promise of the land to Abraham

Genesis 12: Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Mentioned only once, in connection with the visit of Jesus to Jacobs well

(5.) It was while at a wedding feast in Cana that Jesus performed his first miracle (John 2:1). (6.) Jesus went to Capernaum and began his teaching and preaching (Mat. 4:13-17) NOTE: These two events according to the Harmony of the Gospels are between the time Jesus visits Sychar.

Yet, the map we just viewed does not say anything about Jesus stopping in Sychar, which in my estimation was a very important visit of Jesus during his ministry. Interesting 5 6

John 4: Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria. 5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

John 4:6-9 6 Now Jacob's well was there
John 4: Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

Acts 7: Now a famine and great trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance. 12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. 13 And the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to the Pharaoh. 14 Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and all his relatives to him, seventy-five people. 15 So Jacob went down to Egypt; and he died, he and our fathers. 16 And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.
