New Spectroscopy with Charm quarks at B factories. Charm 2006, Beijing June 5-7, 2006 Antimo Palano INFN and University of Bari, Italy for The BaBar Collaboration

Outline Charm Spectroscopy: iNew results on Charmed-strange Mesons. iObservation of a new Ds Meson at a mass of 2.86 GeV. Charmonium spectroscopy: iStudy of ISR production of the DD system. _ Charge conjugation is implied through all this presentation

Update on Charmed-strange Mesons DsJ*(2317)+ and DsJ(2460)+ BABAR: 232 fb-1 Submitted to PRD Comprehensive study of decays to Ds+ plus one or two ±, 0, or ’s Decay pattern if JP=0+ and JP=1+, respectively Ds+0 only decay mode observed for DsJ*(2317)+

DsJ*(2317)+Ds+0 BABAR: 232 fb-1 N=3180±80 No indication of neutral or doubly-charged partner near 2317 MeV  I=0 Ds*(2112) signal Ds*(2112) reflection Dark shade: DsJ(2460) reflection Circles: Ds sidebands

DsJ(2460)+Ds+  / Ds*(2112)+0 DsJ(2460)+  Ds*(2112)+0 BABAR: 232 fb-1 DsJ(2460)+  Ds*(2112)+0 DsJ(2460)+Ds+  Open points: Ds sidebands N=560±40 Open points: Ds sidebands Light shade: Ds*(2112) reflection Dark shade: DsJ*(2317) reflection N=920±60

DsJ(2460)+Ds++- No indication of DsJ*(2317)+ BABAR: 232 fb-1 N=6±3 No indication of DsJ*(2317)+ Also observe Ds1(2536)+ DsJ*(2317) N=193±22 N=123±15 Ds1(2536) DsJ(2460)

DsJ(2460)+ Absolute Branching Fractions. _ BB sample with one B fully reconstructed  study decays of other BD(*)+,0 X Observe DsJ(2460) signals in the recoil mass, mX BABAR: 230M BB e- D* p e+ Breco Bsignal X

DsJ(2460)+ Absolute BFs, cont. BABAR: 122M BB PRL 93, 181801 (2004) Combine with previously measured, exclusive product BFs BD(*) DsJ (2460)+, DsJ(2460)+Ds+ / Ds*(2112)+0 to obtain absolute BFs: Preliminary B(DsJ(2460)+ D*s(2112)+p0)=0.56±0.13±0.09 (Ds*+ Ds++g) B(DsJ(2460)+ Ds+g)=0.16±0.04±0.03 Sum of BFs for DsJ(2460)+ decaying to p0/g = 72±19% B(D+s  f p+)= (4.62±0.36±0.51)% as determined in this analysis

No evidence for Ds(2636)+ claimed by SELEX experiment BABAR: 92 fb-1 Study of inclusive e+e-  D0K+ X Study of inclusive e+e-  Ds+h X No evidence for: Ds(2636)+  D0K+ Ds(2636)+  Ds+h

Observation of a new Ds meson at a mass of 2.86 GeV. BABAR: 240 fb-1 Study of the inclusive production of: e+e-  K+D0 X  K- p+  K- p+p0 e+e-  K0S D+ X  K- p+ p+ 949K 791K 432K Require from now on the center of mass momentum p*(DK)>3.5 GeV/c

Study of the D0K+ system, D0 K- p+ Presence of: Reflection from Ds1(2536)+ Ds1(2536)+  K+D*0  D0 p0/ g produces a narrow structure at threshold. Signal of Ds2(2573)+. Broad structure around 2.7 GeV New structure at 2.86 GeV _

Study of the D K system This new structureat 2.86 GeV is: Not observed in the D0 sidebands. Not observed in the e+e- ccX Monte Carlo Not due to D* reflections. The Monte Carlo does not describe correctly the resonance yields: poor knowledge of charm cross Sections.

Other observations of DsJ(2860)+. Yellow: D sidebands D0K+, D0 K- p+: 872±139 events (6.3 s) D0K+, D0 K- p+p0: 1099±214 events (5.1 s) D+K0S: 585±212 events (2.8 s) Removing the DsJ(2860)+ from the fit: Dc2=108 for DNDF=5

Study of the DK system Ds2(2860)+ parameters: m=2856.6±1.5±5.0 MeV/c2 G=27.1±0.6±5.6 MeV/c2 Sum of the three mass spectra Ds2(2860)+ parameters: m=2856.6±1.5±5.0 MeV/c2 G=48±7±10 MeV/c2 Need extra structure around 2.7 GeV (better described by a Gaussian). Activity in this region seen in the D0 sidebands of channel N2 for very low p* X(2680)+ parameters (if fitted using a Breit Wigner): m=2688±4±2 MeV/c2 G=112±7±36 MeV/c2

Search for D*K decays No evidence for DsJ(2860) decay to: D*0 K+, D*0  D0 p0 D*0 K+, D*0  D0 g D*+K0S, D*+  D+p0 Since DsJ(2860) decays to two pseudoscalars: JP = 0+, 1-, 2+, 3-?

Charmonium Production at BABAR, Belle, and CLEO Continuum production: √s ≤ 10.58 GeV e+e-cc (Initial State Radiation, double charmonium) Two photon Production in B decay: √s ≈ 5.28 GeV bc transition B(cc)K(*)

Charmonium-candidate States Tetraquarks, D*D molecules, ccg hybrids, etc. Charmonium-candidate States State Mass (MeV) Width (MeV) Decay mode(s) JPC X(3872) 3871.2 ± 0.6 <2.3 @ 90% CL +-J/ J/ D0D00 1++ I=0 X(3940) 3943 ± 9 <52 D*D Not DD or J/ 0-+ ? Y(4260)+-J/ Observed in ISR events  JPC = 1-- BABAR: 233 fb-1 Observed in ISR events  JPC = 1-- Indication in B-decay  needs confirmation (2S) Assuming single resonance N=125±23 (>51818 σ) Peak cross section: σ(e+e-Y)=(51±12) pb BABAR: 232M BB

Confirmation of Y(4260) from CLEO-III ISR production of +-J/ events in CLEO-III data near √s=10.58 GeV N≈12 (4.9 σ) CLEO-III: 13.3 fb-1 Preliminary

No evidence for Y(4260) in R-scan Dip in R at √s=4.26GeV Y(4260) R √s (GeV) Y(4260) decay mode  conventional charmonium interpretation does not fit well

Y(4260): charmonium state? Not easy to classify Y(4260) as a standard JPC=1— charmonium state. Other possibilities involve: Mesonic or baryonic molecule; Hybrid meson; A coupled channel signal. Need to study other decay modes.

Study of exclusive production of DD states in ISR _ BABAR: 289 fb-1 Efficiency for detecting the ISR photon small, therefore reconstruct the g ISR as a missing particle.

Calibration performed using the K+K-p+p- control sample K+K-p+p- effective mass: contributions from two photon and ISR events Plot of the number of J/y as a function of the missing mass squared: MM2 = |pe+ + pe- - p K+ - pK- - pp+ - pp-|2 s(MM2) =0.400 GeV2

Reconstructed 4 DD channels. _ N4: D0K-p+,D0K+p- N5: D0K-p+,D0K+p-p0 N6: D0K-p+,,D0K+p-p+p- C6: D+K-p+p+,D-K+p-p- Labels: Charged or Neutral Number of particles in the final state

Channels reconstruction Background estimated using the 9-tiles method. Signal: tile 5. Background: 2+4+6+8-(1+3+7+9) Yellow: sidebands background ISR events defined by the cut: |MM2|<1 GeV2

Efficiency and resolution Efficiency x B.F. = 0.59 x 10-3 Mass resolution: 5 MeV at the Y(4260)

DD mass spectrum _ Mass spectrum fitted with interfering: Presence of structure at 3.9 GeV (Not due to a new charmonium state but to a threshold effect predicted by E. Eichten et al.,Phys.Rev. D21 (1980) 203.) y(3770) y(4040) y(4160) y(4415) y(4260) Preliminary

No Indication for Y(4260) in Other ISR-produced Final States BABAR: 232 fb-1 Preliminary M(K+K-) Y(4260) Shaded:  sidebands Events having a reconstructed gISR photon. BABAR: 232 fb-1

Conclusions New measurements of the DsJ parameters. Observation of a new Ds meson at a mass of 2.86 GeV/c2 No evidence for Y(4260) D D _
