Presentation transcript:

Analyzing Kafka You will need a piece of paper and something to write with for the assignment today. You will also want your reading notes out to help you respond to the questions.

Respond 1. In a more conventionally realistic story, what are some questions the characters from “The Metamorphosis” might ask? Come up with at least three.

What makes something “Kafkaesque”?

Kafkaesque - Copy Most notable examples include instances in which bureaucracies overpower people, often in a surreal, nightmarish environment which evokes feelings of disorientation and helplessness. Characters in a Kafkaesque settings often lack a clear course of action to escape a mazelike situation. The term has transcended the literary realm to apply to real-life occurrences and situations that are incomprehensibly complex, bizarre, or illogical.

Respond 2. A lot of aspects of Kafka’s story leads to a blurred perception. What makes “The Metamorphosis” Kafkaesque? Go back to your reading notes and the text and note at least 3 specific examples of how it fits the defining characteristics.

Kafkaesque Today Discuss: Even though it’s just a short comedy video, in what way is this Kafkaesque?

Kafkaesque Today – Respond Franz Kafka died of tuberculosis in 1924 in his 40s. He was not a well- known writer during his lifetime. Despite passing away in obscurity at a young age, many of his readers believe that his stories have become more relevant with time. 3. What are some ways in which Kafka seems relevant today? Identify examples from every day life and/or current events. What are some themes, ideas, trends, and problems that Kafka’s writing seems to have observed and anticipated? Respond it at least 6 well-written sentences. Learning Goal: LAFS.910.W.3.9 Draw evidence from literary and informational texts to support analysis and reflection.

Kafkaesque Today Read along as I read the article “Muslims Sue Over Denial of Bid to Build Mosque in New Jersey Suburb” from the New York Times. After we read in a few sentences respond to the following: While it is certainly a difficult and frustrating situation, is it accurate to describe the process described in the article as Kafkaesque? Why or why not?
