Sub - Phylum Chelicerata Class: Arachnida Arthropods without mandibles and antennae. Have 6 pairs of appendages: Including: 4 Pairs of walking legs One pair of fanglike mouth parts (chelicerae) One pair of pedipalps 2 Body sections: Cephalothorax Abdomen

Chelicerates 2

1 Cephalothorax 2 Abdomen 6 4 3 9 5 8 Fanglike chelicera 555 5 7

Functions: Chelicerae – contain fangs used to stab and paralyze prey with venom. Pedipalps – grab prey Spinnerets – Organs that contain silk glands, force silk through these. Book lungs – Used for respiration (O2 enters through the spiracle.

Functions continue: Malpighian tubules – For excretion of metabolic wastes. Chelicerate groups: Horsehoe crabs Sea spiders Arachnids – include spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks and chiggers. Adaptations shared by arachnids: Waterproof cuticle Book lungs Malpighian tubules Spiracles

Types of arachnids: Spiders Mites Ticks Chiggers Scorpions
