The formation of gametes Meiosis The formation of gametes Sections 6.1, 6.2, 6.6

Terminology to memorize! Diploid or 2N- contains a full set of chromosomes, found in somatic body cells. Haploid or N- contains half of the genetic information, found in gametes

Homologous Chromosomes A pair of chromosomes, one is inherited from the mother, one from the father These daughter cells are diploid!

Karyotype- all are homologous 22 pairs of autosomes 1 pair of sex chromosomes

The germ cell undergoes two divisions to form four gametes Interphase I chromosomes duplicate Interphase II no duplication

Crossing Over Prophase 1 of Meiosis adds genetic variation

results in one egg and two polar bodies. Meiosis in ovaries results in one egg and two polar bodies.

Mitosis vs. Meiosis 2N N

Meiosis results in 4 haploid gametes diploid Homologous chromsomes N haploid

The goal of meiosis is to form haploid gametes which after sexual fertilization result in a diploid zygote

Mitosis vs. Meiosis Mitosis Meiosis Where process occurs # of cell divisions # of cells formed N # of chromosomes What end cells are called
