Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 July 2012 Abstract This contribution describes a technical proposal for Tgai AP discovery. In this proposal, channel priority per SSID is proposed. STA scans for a AP starting from a specific channel calculated from the target AP’s SSID, to improve the AP discovery efficiency. And channels can be decided by AP to have different priorities as its working channel. Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI John Doe, Some Company

Conformance w/ TGai PAR & 5C July 2012 Conformance w/ TGai PAR & 5C Conformance Question Response Does the proposal degrade the security offered by Robust Security Network Association (RSNA) already defined in 802.11? No Does the proposal change the MAC SAP interface? Does the proposal require or introduce a change to the 802.1 architecture? Does the proposal introduce a change in the channel access mechanism? Does the proposal introduce a change in the PHY? Which of the following link set-up phases is addressed by the proposal? (1) AP Discovery (2) Network Discovery (3) Link (re-)establishment / exchange of security related messages (4) Higher layer aspects, e.g. IP address assignment 1 Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI

Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 July 2012 Problem Statement AP in CH3 Probe Response in CH3 Probe Request in CH1 Probe Request in CH2 Probe Request in CH3 STA T1 T2 T3 Active Scan case AP in CH3 Beacon in CH3 Listen in CH1 Listen in CH2 Listen in CH3 STA T1 T2 T3 Passive Scan case In above examples, the scanning time T1 and T2 in CH1 and CH2 are wasted. If a AP randomly selects a working channel, and STA scan for a AP starting with a randomly chosen channel, time can be wasted before the STA can find the target channel. Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI John Doe, Some Company

Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 July 2012 Proposed Solution 1 AP selects a specific channel as its working channel with higher priority per SSID. The specific channel could be a channel calculated from the AP’s SSID. STA scan for the target AP starting from the specific channel. The specific channel is a channel calculated from the AP’s SSID, with the same rule as used by AP. Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI John Doe, Some Company

Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 July 2012 Proposed Solution 2 AP in CH3 Probe Response in CH3 Probe Request in CH3 STA T1 Active Scan case AP in CH3 Beacon in CH3 Listen in CH3 STA T1 Passive Scan case STA starts to scan from a specific channel, then the target AP could be found within T1. Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI John Doe, Some Company

Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 July 2012 Error handling What if the specific channel is not available when AP select its working channel? AP could select the second, third, fourth, … specific channel, as its working channel. The second, third, fourth, … specific channel could be decided from the AP’s SSID. What if the target AP can not be found in the specific channel by a STA? STA could continue the scan in the second, third, fourth, … specific channel. The second, third, fourth, … specific channel could be calculated from the target AP’s SSID, with same rule as used by AP Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI John Doe, Some Company

July 2012 Summary AP selects a specific channel as its working channel according to its SSID, and STA scan for the target AP start from this specific channel to speed up the AP/network discovery. Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI

Q&A-1 Q: How will this work for an AP with multiple SSIDs? July 2012 Q&A-1 Q: How will this work for an AP with multiple SSIDs? For this kind of AP with multiple SSIDs,  you can decide the working channel based on one of the SSIDs, so to speed up AP discovery for that SSID, but for the rest of the SSIDs, compare to the randomly scanning, you can still get some gain (for that specific SSID). Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI

July 2012 Straw Poll Do you support adding the following text to the subsection of 6.1 in the TGai SFD, 12/0151r7: 11ai should have mechanism to support that AP select its working channel according to its SSID, and STA scan a target AP with known SSID from the channel according to the SSID Yes: No: Abstain: Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI

July 2012 Motion Do you support adding the following text to the subsection of 6.1 in the TGai SFD, 12/0151r7: 11ai should have mechanism to support that AP select its working channel according to its SSID, and STA scan a target AP with known SSID from the channel according to the SSID Yes: No: Abstain: Huawei, China Mobile, KDDI
