HOW TO USE THIS PRESENTATION DECK This slide deck has been created by the U.S. Department of Education as a resource tool for the public and is part of a larger bookshelf of resources that may be found on the Departments website. Within the larger bookshelf, you will find individual resource booklets like this one, on topics ranging from early learning to higher education. Together, these booklets provide facts and data on: – Progress in education reform – The challenges ahead – The U.S. Department of Educations initiatives in these areas Please view the notes section on each slide for additional information and resources. The entire deck is in the public domain, and may be used and shared freely. 2

TECHNOLOGY & DATA The State Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) Grant Program, administered through the Institute of Education Sciences, aims to improve state data systems by strengthening linkages among early learning, K-12 education, higher education, and workforce data. 3 FEDERAL FUNDING SUPPORT

TECHNOLOGY & DATA The U.S. Department of Educations new ED Data Inventory is a searchable website containing descriptions about data that the Department collects as part of program and grant activities, as well as statistical data collections. Richer information about the Departments data makes this information more accessible and understandable to researchers, developers, and entrepreneurs. The aim of the ED Data Inventory is to use freely available government data alongside other resources to advance new educational studies and services. FEDERAL SUPPORT 4

TECHNOLOGY & DATA Since 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Commerce Department have provided about $7 billion in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to improve or expand broadband service in more than 7,000 schools with more than 3,300 additional schools slated for connection or upgrading. 7 THE NEED FOR BANDWIDTH
