Latent Heat of Phase Changes

There are 3 phases (states) of matter. Solid- definite shape and volume, has the least energy (ice) Liquid- takes the shape of its container and has a definite volume, more energy (water) Gas- takes the shape of its container and its volume can change, even more energy (water vapor) can never be seen !!!!!!

Latent heat is the energy needed to change from one phase to another. Example: in order for ice to change into water it must gain energy While a phase change is happening all the energy is being used to change the phase and the temperature remains constant.

Phase from Phase to Phase change name Latent Heat There are 4 phase changes : Phase from Phase to Phase change name Latent Heat Solid Liquid Melt Gain Vaporization Liquid Gas Gain Examples: boiling and evaporation Gas Liquid Condensation Lost Liquid Solid Freeze Lost
