Year 2 Summer Term Week 10 Lesson 1 Understanding Multiplication and Division Year 2 Summer Term Week 10 Lesson 1

Today we will be learning to: multiply and divide numbers use multiplication and division vocabulary multiply and divide by 10 find unknown numbers.

What’s my number operation? Mental Activity What’s my number operation?

One child wears a headband with a number attached to it. That same person calls out a number to the class.

The class multiplies that number by the number on the headband and calls out the answer. The child with the headband works out what the number on the headband is.

Main Activity Today we are going to work on problems involving multiplication and division including finding unknowns.

This machine carries out number operations. Function machine. . This machine carries out number operations.

This is a x1 function machine.

what number will come out? Function machine. 4 x1 If 4 goes in what number will come out?

what number will come out? Function machine. 5 x1 If 5 goes in what number will come out?

what number will come out? Function machine. x1 10 If 10 goes in what number will come out?

Function machine. 8 x1 If 8 comes out what number went in?

This is a x2 function machine.

what number will come out? Function machine. 4 x2 If 4 goes in what number will come out?

what number will come out? Function machine. 12 x2 If 12 goes in what number will come out?

Function machine. 8 x2 If 8 comes out what number went in?

This is a ÷2 function machine.

what number will come out? Function machine. ÷2 6 If 6 goes in what number will come out?

what number will come out? Function machine. 10 ÷2 If 10 goes in what number will come out?

Function machine. ÷2 7 If 7 comes out what number went in?

Group Work Use a cardboard box to make a function machine for x1 or x2. Use different colours of wool for each in/out pair of numbers. Practise using multiplication and division function machines for two-step functions such as x2 x10. Practise using multiplication and division function machines for x10, x3 and ÷10.
