Geography Unit 1: Physical Patterns in Changing World Will take us until April 30th

What is Geography?

Geography The study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land use, and industries.

Two Major Types of Geography?

Social Geography Deals with PEOPLE The study of people and their environment with particular emphasis on social factors. WHERE are People and WHY are they there?

Physical Geography Deals with THINGS The branch of geography dealing with natural features and processes. Mountains Lakes Rivers Plateaus Forests Etc.

Game On your piece of paper, name me ALL of the 10 Provinces and 3 Territories 13 in Total Whoever can get them all will win a Prize! You have 2 minutes!

Mapping!

What is a Map?

Mapping A diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.

Maps Can be Confusing? Maps can be of many different: Sizes Directions Zoomed in on an Area or Zoomed out

How to Get Good at Reading Maps?

How to Get Good at Reading Maps? Recognize FAMILIAR locations and landmarks! Let’s Play a game Winner Gets a Piece of Candy I will show you a piece of a map, and you tell me where that part is on the LARGER map!

What Do Maps Need?

Ways of Determining Different Places Examples: Colours Lines Patterns That show us the different Countries Provinces Etc

Compass Rose Show us the Proper Directions Typically in the top right or left hand corner of the map, but there no true rule

Legend (Key) This gives you the information needed for the map to make sense Explains what specific things on the map mean such as: Symbols Colours Lines

Some Writing (VERY LITTLE) Typically to mark places that aren’t associated with the Legend Typically: Cities Oceans Etc.

Scale Unless a map is the EXACT SAME SIZE as the thing that you are mapping, you need a Scale The scale compares the Size of the Map to the Size of the place in Real Life It helps if you think of a map as sort of a MINIATURE version of the place in real life

Mr. Meyer’s Opinion NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE know about maps, geography, and even Canada for that matter Not just kids. Adults too! 20% of Canadians can’t locate it on a map Less than 50% can locate all of the Provinces 81% cannot locate Asian countries such as Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan We need to know more about the World!!!

Your Task Due at the beginning of the day on Thursday You must Complete 3 Maps of Canada 1. Provinces and Territories 2. Physiographic Regions of Canada 3. Important Landforms of Canada

For Each Map You will be created to create a: Legend Compass Rose Small Writing (Only for Map 3) DO NOT need to make a Scale Use Colours (Pencil Crayons)
