Work and Simple Machines
A lever is a machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge or fulcrum. A lever amplifies an input force to provide a greater.

Levers What is the relationship between Key Question: What is the relationship between force and distance for a lever?

What is a lever? A stiff structure that rotates around a fixed point called a fulcrum. Levers are practically useful for multiplying the force that can be applied to an object for changing the direction of the object.

First Class Lever Pliers are an example of a first class lever The input and output forces are balanced on either side of the fulcrum.

Second Class Lever A wheelbarrow is an example of a second class lever. The output force is between the input force and the fulcrum (the wheel).

Third Class Lever Arms and legs are third class levers. The input force is between the fulcrum and the output force.

What is the relationship between force and distance for a lever? Mechanical advantage is the ratio of the length of the input arm over the length of the output arm. MA= Li / Lo
