Akkadians (Sargon) Akkadians lived north of Sumer, are not Sumerians Sargon –Akkadian king who conquers all Sumerian city-states First ruler of permanent army

Sargon -Established the world’s first empire Empire- land with different territories and peoples under a single rule (2300s BC)

Rise of Babylon Babylon – city on Euphrates River (near Baghdad, Iraq) In 1792 BC, Babylon got a new king by the name of Hammurabi Hammurabi = military leader, Babylonian king

Hammurabi Hammurabi overtook all of Mesopotamia to establish the Babylonian Empire

Code of Laws Hammurabi was most famous for his code of laws Hammurabi’s Code- a set of 282 laws that dealt with every part of daily life (Laws on everything from trade, loans, theft, marriage, injury & murder)

Hammurabi In Hammurabi’s Code, social class mattered (Example: There was a more severe penalty for injuring a rich man than a poor man) Code was important because it was written down for all to see

Assyrians Iron weapons & chariots Fierce in battle, burnt crops, looted villages before attacking

Chaldeans -Nebuchadnezzar (the king) rebuilt Babylon and the supposed Hanging Gardens of Babylon (~600BC) -One of the 7 wonders of the ancient world

The Phoenicians Phoenicians-Wealthy trading society on edge of Mediterranean Sea Expert sailors & craftspeople Created a purple dye which became very popular with rich people
