**You gonna need your reference sheets and calculator for this lecture**

The mole The mole is a number usually used to describe small things 1 mole = 6.022x1023 atoms/molecules/formula units….atomic sized things

Molar Mass By definition, this is the mass of 1 mol of a substance. (g/mol) The masses of the elements on the periodic table are the molar masses. In effect- amu = g/mol

Molar volume Each gaseous element or compound take up the same space at standard temperature and pressure (1 atm/0 degrees C) 22.4 L/mol

Molecules

The return of factor label method!! How many grams are in 3 moles of NaCl? How many moles are in 15.3g of calcium nitride?

Particles How many moles are in 42.1 x 1042 particles of Iron? How many particles of Cobalt are in 2.1 moles?

Volume How many liters are in 2.345 moles of hydrogen gas? How many moles are there in 70.2 liters of argon gas?

Multiple Stuffz How many liters of gas are in 342 grams of Sulfur hexafluoride? How many particles are in 98 grams of sulfuric acid?

For now that’s it!

Molarity Unlike molar volume which deals with gasses, this deals with concentration of stuff dissolved in water. It is expressed in units of Mole/Liter. Moles of stuff dissolved per liter of water. Solute = stuff being dissolved Solvent = stuff doing the dissolving Solution = both of them together.

Molarity What is the molarity of a solution containing 1.4 moles of hydrochloric acid in 560 ml of water? What is the molarity of a solution of 67.3 grams of sodium bicarbonate dissolved in 255 ml of water?

The Mole Cont. % composition Finding empirical and molecular formulas Empirical formulas represent the formula for the atoms represented, in a molecule as the smallest whole number. Molecular formulas are the actual number of atoms in a compound.

A sample of carbon and oxygen is determined to be 27.27% carbon and 72.73% oxygen. What is the empirical formula? The molecular weight is 88 g/mol. What is the molecular formula?

Fools gold, Iron pyrite, is a compound of iron and sulfur. It is 46 Fools gold, Iron pyrite, is a compound of iron and sulfur. It is 46.59% iron. What is the empirical formula?

A compound is 43.64 % P and 56.36 % O. What is the empirical formula?
