Robert Browning published ‘My Last Duchess’ in 1842 in a book of poems entitled, Dramatic Lyrics. Alfonso II of Modena and Ferrara (1559-1597) married Lucrezia de Doctors and she died four years later in mysterious circumstances. The Duke later went on to marry the niece of the Count of Tyrol. It is suggested that in the poem, the narrator is in fact meeting with the Count, or an emissary, to try and persuade him to allow him to marry his niece.
