(A-C) At early somitogenesis (∼8-10 somites) stages, Shh transcript accumulates throughout the axial mesoderm (presumptive notochord) in mouse, chicken and zebrafish embryos and is already detectable in the forming floorplate of the zebrafish embryo. (D-F) By later somitogenesis stages, transcript is detectable throughout the ventral floor of the brain and neural tube but is beginning to dissipate from the notochord.
