Early Man Cave Paintings

The earliest (surviving) cave paintings date back to around 37,000 BC The earliest (surviving) cave paintings date back to around 37,000 BC. That’s over 39,000 years ago!

The animals painted had a very important role in their lives The animals painted had a very important role in their lives. Paintings of cows, bulls, horses, bison, and deer have been found.

These painting were found deep underground These painting were found deep underground. They were most likely painted by the light of torches.

It is possible that these early humans believed that by drawing these images, they would help to guarantee plentiful herds and good hunting.

It is also possible that it was believed that man had to paint these images to 'replace' the animals that he would hunt and kill.

These early artists painted with charcoal from their fires, and used earth pigments of iron and manganese to create the permanent colors we still see today.
