March 4, BW 2. Interpretations of scene 3. Finish Scene 2 4. Begin watching movies Daily Objective: By end of class, students should understand personal interpretation of scene and have finished scene 2.

BW The best school appropriate joke youve ever heard. OR Where would you be/what would you do if the zombie apocalypse comes to pass? What is your survival strategy? OR Write a punny (get it?) story.

Shakespeares universality Compare R&J to more modern drama. Lack of direction opens plot up to personal interpretation of director/actor/viewer/reader.

Oh Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art though Romeo? Depressed Self-mocking Wistful (regretful longing) Slightly angry Confused Pensive (thoughtful)

Scene 2 Begins with couplet connected to Scene 1 Also, J wouldnt have said what she did if she knew R was listening. Sets pace and romantic tone for rest of play.

Light v Dark Previously, R compared Rosaline to the moon, but J is the sunshe outshines the moon. A sun has risen on a new world for R. As he steps from darkness to light he moves from emo, melodramatic self to more mature understanding of love.

Light v Dark cont. Also, remember they can only meet under cover of night.

Spiritual Love Compare the way R&J speak to Mercutios language in last scene.

Maturation of Romeo Previously spoke in a lot of cheesy couplets. Now he speaks in blank verse. He is no longer satisfied with his self-pity.

R compared to J J is still more mature than R. J initiates talk of marriage. J arranges practical elements of their next meeting. J stops R from using standard Petrarchan language to declare his love. J stops R from swearing on the inconstant moon. J encourages R to be more genuine, rather than full of wit and melodrama.

In movies We will watch four versions: Classic, modern, musical and zombie. What is true to text? What is different? What is not directly stated in text, but could be read into it?

Rest of Week Wednesday: Finish Scene 2 Thursday: DUEscenes 3 and 4 Friday: DUEscenes 5 and 6 Act II assessment, Monday or Tuesday next week.

All Act II Readings Make sure to pay attention to figurative languagewhat it is and why its used? Themeswhere do you notice it and what is it saying?
