John 21:   1Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.  4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”  “No,” they answered.  6He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”     “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

What did Jesus mean by ‘these’? “…do you love me more than these?”     What did Jesus mean by ‘these’?

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” 15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”     “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

18Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 1. To be instruments fit for service to Jesus, we must first be broken.

1. Have I been broken? Were the trials I have been through designed to kill the parts of me that must die? Is the Lord right now taking me through a time intended to break me?

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 2. Our brokenness is not the end of life; it is the beginning of our real life’s adventure!

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 3. Jesus redeems! He makes all things new! And He always gives us another chance!

2nd Corinthians 5: 17… if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.

2nd Corinthians 5: 17… if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.

Ephesians 4: 21… because the truth is in Jesus… 22 … take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires; 23 you are being renewed in the spirit of your minds; 24 … put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 4. Jesus loves us too much to let us go back to the old life.

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 5. Once we have walked with the Lord, anything else is nonproductive and unfulfilling.

2. Am I settling for second-best, instead of enjoying my second chance?

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 6. For followers of Jesus, the past is past. He enables us to be free of it, not stuck in it.

3. Am I somehow stuck in the past 3. Am I somehow stuck in the past? Is the bondage of holding onto the old me preventing me from enjoying the freedom of the new me?

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 7. We are not saved so that we can sit and soak up grace like a sponge; we are saved so that we can surrender and serve Jesus with our whole life.

Things we can learn from Peter’s story: 8. God desires us to live with passion – for Him!

4. Have I quenched the passion of the Holy Spirit within me 4. Have I quenched the passion of the Holy Spirit within me? Am I allowing my failures, or the cares and pleasures of this world, to dampen the wonder and joy of the new life He has given me?

The REST of the Story…

Do I have some decisions to make?
