Helping Babies Breathe: Neonatal Resuscitative Teaching to Midwives in Ghana, West Africa By Hannah Matthews, SN and Olivia Meyers, SN Mentor: Chris Sloan, Ph.D., RN, CNS, CPN

Relevance Neonatal mortality in USA 4 out of 1,000 live births Neonatal mortality in Ghana 29 out of every 1,000 Causes

Objective: Helping Babies Breathe Initiative Purpose: The purpose of this project was to implement a modified HBB lesson to increase midwives’ competence with neonatal resuscitation Goal: To teach usable skills to potentially decrease infant mortality at a hospital in Ghana

Helping Babies Breathe Helping Babies Breathe is an evidence-based educational program designed for low-resource areas Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Birth attendants are taught how to assess and treat newborns in the first moments after birth Step-by-step algorithm, demonstration, and hands-on practice with NeoNatalie Simulator

Trip 1: Summer 2017 Location: St. Paul’s Hospital for the Handicapped, Akatsi Ghana

Methodology Two two-hour education sessions Four midwives Started with pre-tests about a healthy birth and a birth needing more resuscitative efforts. Concluded with post-tests and feedback on missed skills

What We Did Day 2 Ventilation Heart Rate Post tests Survey

Results Pre-Test Mean Scores OSCE A: 39.2% OSCE B: 37.5% Post-Test Mean Scores OSCE A: 71.4% OSCE B: 83.8%

Post-Curriculum Survey Aspects of class participants found helpful Hands-on practice, ventilation with ambu bag Aspects that could be improved upon Wanted more practice time Post-Teaching confidence level All rated 9/10 Aspects still challenging to participants Ventilation, tight seal, working alone Do participants feel as if they could teach course to others? 4/4 participants stated yes

Challenges Time During a work day Small Sample Size (n = 4) Long term outcomes Future suggestions
