Gas Chamber - what is it? –Animals slated for euthanasia are jammed in a locked box on top of one another –They smell death from prior animals and begin to scream and claw each other in an effort to escape –Oxygen is eliminated by means of CO 2 or carbon monoxide induction by shelter workers –Animals begin to experience convulsions, muscle spasms, angina and vomiting – not all animals die the first round –The process takes approximately 25 minutes to up to 40 minutes 1 Source 1 : Beckhams Bill Source: PETA Source: National Geographic News Source: Animal Law Coalition

A Statement to Senator Lehtinen All America is tarnished by this dirty little secret. Shocking is the sheer number of Americans that had no clue this was happening and are unhappy their tax dollars are being used to fund the usage of barbaric gas chambers. Moreover, how can this practice be accepted in one state and banned in the next? We believe the time is now to institute a national ban which abolishes this practice. In a perfect world, there would be no need for euthanasia; however with shelters extremely overpopulated, we are left with no choice. It is vital that we do something to protect the unfortunate chosen ones so they are not subjected to needless suffering by dying a torturous death. The Die-hards, quote the AVMA guidelines to support their case, but recently the AVMA changed their wording to say that gassing is NOT acceptable. This is a big change & more is coming. They also say gas is cheaper than EBI which is untrue! If the one animal at a time guideline is followed, EBI is half the cost. We have been working on this on a state by state basis for some time now gaining a great deal of support. However, it is getting more difficult as we get down to the states that cling to old ways and perceive animal lovers as left wing liberal types with no credibility. How can people be proud to be American knowing this? –I realize the economy is top of everyones list right now but I believe this will be a popular bill across the US. –I am sure there are all kinds of issues that may be raised along the way BUT in the end it is really quite simple ~ This is wrong so, Ban it!

Why Ban Is Needed? The usage of gas chambers to euthanize animals … The usage of gas chambers to euthanize animals … –Inflicts unnecessary severe physical pain to the animals –Is terrifying to multitudes of animals are jammed in the chambers at once –Hypocritical as gassing human criminals has been replaced by lethal injection as it was found to be inhumane –Puts gas chamber workers at risk from CO 2 or carbon Monoxide poisoning therefore putting counties at risk for lawsuits by shelter workers Improperly handled or poorly maintained, gas chambers cause serious illness or even death. Numerous cases of such incidents, including that of a shelter worker in Tennessee who died in 2000 while operating a faulty gas chamber 1 Improperly handled or poorly maintained, gas chambers cause serious illness or even death.
