Ancient Greece

3,500 years ago Greece was made up of many city-states.

Two of the most famous were Athens and Sparta.

In Athens the main focus was on education.

In Sparta the focus was on being the best warrior.

In the city of Athens you can still see on the hill (called Acropolis) the famous temple called the Parthenon.

The Parthenon was built in honour of the goddess Athena, the protector god of the city.

The city states of ancient Greece were always fighting with each other.

They only stopped when they united together to fight against their common enemy Persia

They also called a truce when it was time to compete in the Olympic games.

The Olympics were held in Olympia to honour the god Zeus The Olympics were held in Olympia to honour the god Zeus. It is believed to have started in 776 B.C.

Greek Influence The Greeks gave us democracy, the theater, philosophy, mathematics, art, trial by jury, architecture and even the yo-yo. WHAT DID THE GREEKS DO FOR US?
