CCGPS S8P5b. Construct an explanation using Newton’s Laws of Motion to describe the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. c. Construct an argument from evidence to support the claim that the amount of force needed to accelerate an object is proportional to its mass (inertia).

Newton’s First Law of Motion States that an object at rest will remain at rest, and an object at a constant velocity will continue moving at a constant velocity, unless it is acted on by an unbalanced force. Normal Force The normal force is the support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object. For example, if a book is resting upon a surface, then the surface is exerting an upward force upon the book in order to support the weight of the book.

Mass (F=MA) A measure of how much matter is in an object. The basic unit of measurement for mass is the kilogram. F=MA – Force equals Mass x Acceleration

Law of Conservation of Momentum The rule that in the absence of outside forces, the total momentum of objects that interact does not change. The amount of momentum is the same before and after interaction.
