Think carefully about this Jesus Hebrews 3:1-6

I. Thinking carefully about Jesus should lead us to conclude that He was just as faithful in His ministry as Moses was (verses 1-2) 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:2

II. Thinking carefully about Jesus should lead us to conclude that He is worthy of much more glory and honor than Moses (verses 3-6) Because Jesus is the builder of, and heir to, God’s household (verses 3-4) 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses— as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.)

II. Thinking carefully about Jesus should lead us to conclude that He is worthy of much more glory and honor than Moses (verses 3-6) Because Jesus is the builder of, and heir to, God’s household (verses 3-4) Because Jesus’ status as Son over God’s household is greater than Moses’ status as a servant in God’s household (verses 5-6) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

Moses was faithful…to testify to the things that were to be spoken later Hebrews 3:5 “Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” John 5:45-47

“Who do you say that I am?” Matthew 16:15

III. We are God’s household “if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope” (verse 6) “For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” Hebrews 3:14 “The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations.” Revelation 2:26 “But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” Matthew 10:22

III. We are God’s household “if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope” (verse 6) “And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven…” Colossians 1:21-23

III. We are God’s household “if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope” (verse 6) “…we find [in the book of Hebrews] such repeated insistence on the fact that continuance in the Christian life is the test of reality. The doctrine of the final perseverance of the saints has as its corollary the salutary teaching that the saints are the people who persevere to the end.” F.F. Bruce

III. We are God’s household “if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope” (verse 6) “We believe that though each believer is secure in Christ forever and can rejoice in the assurance of their salvation, it is not to be an occasion for sin. Each believer is not only set apart by God for heaven but also His glory on earth. Therefore, the Holy Spirit continues to work in every believer making them holy by convicting them of sin and conforming their character, affections and behavior into the image of Christ so that they persevere in Christ.” LBC Doctrine Statement on Sanctification
