Medical Math Chapter 13

Spelling Words Celsius nomenclature percentage centigrade proportion Fahrenheit reciprocal metric system Roman numeral military time

Why use military time? To avoid confusion If the AM or PM is left out of the traditional system, an error of 12 hours is made. Accuracy is important! Entering data on a patient chart Recording when medications are given Signing off on physician orders

When using military time, always use four digits AM hours are expressed with the same numbers as the traditional clock 5:30 AM = 0530 10 AM = 1000 12 Noon = 1200

An easy way to convert the PM hours is to add the time to 1200

Why use Roman numerals in health care? Used for some: medications solutions ordering systems

I = 1 V=5 X=10 L=50 C=100 D=500 M=1000

Household Measurement System Distance/Length 12 in = 1 ft 3 ft = 1 yd in = inches ft = foot yd = yard

Volume 1 gtt (drop) 60 gtt = 1 tsp 3 tsp = 1 tbsp 2 tbsp = 1 oz 8 oz = 1 cup t or tsp = teaspoon T or tbsp = tablespoon oz = ounce

Weight 16 oz = 1 lb ounce = oz pound = lb

Metric System 1 mL = 1 cc mL = milliliter cc = cubic centimeter

Appox equivalents between the two measuring systems 1 tsp = 5 mL 1 oz = 30 mL 2.2 lb = 1 kg

A patient weighs 120 pounds. Convert to kilograms. 2.2 lb = 1 kg 120 lb x 2.2 x = 120 x= 54.5 kg
