TGah Coexistence Assurance Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 March 2012 TGah Coexistence Assurance Date: 2012-03-14 Authors: Panasonic John Doe, Some Company

March 2012 Abstract Discussion on the typical scenarios and potential topics for TGah Coexistence Quick comparison between TGah channelization proposal and IEEE802.15.4 / 4g channelizations for each country Panasonic

Coexistence Requirements in PAR and 5C March 2012 Coexistence Requirements in PAR and 5C Text from PAR “provides mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the bands including IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE P802.15.4g” Text from 5C 17.5.4.1 Coexistence of 802 wireless standards specifying devices for unlicensed operation A working group proposing a wireless project is required to demonstrate coexistence through the preparation of a Coexistence Assurance (CA) document unless it is not applicable. The Working Group will create a CA document as part of the WG balloting process. If the Working Group elects not to create a CA document, it will explain to the EC the reason the CA document is not applicable. The working group will create a CA document and specifically reference IEEE P802.15.4g as part of the WG balloting process Panasonic

Typical Coexistence Scenario 1 March 2012 Typical Coexistence Scenario 1 After 11ah devices activated Home Appliances Home Appliances IEEE802.15.4 link CHL1 IEEE802.15.4 link CHL1 IEEE802.11ah link CHL2 15.4 network formed before 11ah device activation: 11ah devices are able to detect the existing 15.4 link at the Channel 1 at a certain sensitivity level, before set up 11ah network at the same channel If another channel (e.g. 2) is available, 11ah devices are able to find it and switch for network setup. Both links shall minimize interferences to each other for QoS guarantee. If another channel is not available, 11ah devices will define some coexistence solution in order to co-exist with 15.4 network at the Channel 1 or try again after random backoff. Panasonic

Typical Coexistence Scenario 2 March 2012 Typical Coexistence Scenario 2 After 15.4 devices activated Home Appliances IEEE802.11ah link CHL1 IEEE802.11ah link CHL1 IEEE802.15.4 link CHL2 11ah network formed before 15.4 device activation: 15.4 devices are able to detect the existing 11ah link at the Channel 1 at a certain sensitivity level, before set up 15.4 network at the same channel If 15.4 PAN coordinator is able to detect the existing 11ah network, they shall switch to another channel (if available) to avoid the interference or try again after random backoff. If 15.4 PAN coordinator is not able to detect the existing 11ah network and form 15.4 network at the same channel, 11ah network may detect the interference and define some coexistence solution in order to co-exist with 15.4 network. Panasonic

Potential Topics for TGah Coexistence March 2012 Potential Topics for TGah Coexistence Channelization Transmit Spectrum Mask Minimize the adjacent channel interference Channel Sensing Energy Detection / Carrier Sensing : simple and applicable to all signal formats Pilot / Preamble Detection: better sensitivity, but need prior knowledge of 15.4 / 4g signals with various modulations adopted Transmit Power Control Reduce transmit power for STA based on link quality information (LQI) MAC Scheduling Low duty cycle Change MAC scheduling to avoid the collision Interference Mitigation (PHY, MAC) FEC etc …… Panasonic

Channelization √ March 2012 Channelization is the simplest, fundamental and most effective coexistence solution Both systems set a proper channelization (bandwidth + frequency alignment) for Easier and better channel sensing Minimized adjacent channel interference Efficient usage of spectrum resource Multiple channels are desired for channel switching. √ Wasted Spectrum Panasonic

Channelization Comparison (1) March 2012 Channelization Comparison (1) Based on the regulations at each country, the channelization schemes of 15.4, 15.4g and current TGah proposals are summarized and presented Underlining specifications and contributions are as follows: 15.4-2011 specification Combination of 15.4-2006, 15.4c and 15.4d specifications 15.4g D7 draft specification TGah contributions 11-11-1137-05-00ah-specification-framework-for-tgah 11-12-0092-01-00ah-proposed-us-channelization-for-ieee802-11ah Singapore Sub-GHz frequency band is not covered by 15.4 and 15.4g, so it is not discussed in this contribution. Panasonic

Channelization Comparison (2) March 2012 Channelization Comparison (2) Only the overlapped frequency band between 15.4/15.4g and current TGah proposals are compared for each country 15.4 also covers 3-10GHz UWB band and 2.45GHz band 15.4g covers many irrelevant bands, e.g. 169MHz, 450MHz, 470MHz, 1.5GHz and etc. Frequency alignment of 1MHz and above bandwidth is more important 15.4 and 15.4g adopt various bandwidth, such as 0.2MHz, 0.4MHz, 0.6MHz, 0.8MHz, 1.2MHz and 2MHz, so it is difficult for TGah to achieve a well-matched alignment to all those bandwidths Focus on frequency alignment of 1MHz and above Smaller bandwidth leads to more available channels, and it is easier for them to find another empty channel Current TGah adopts 1MHz, 2MHz, 4MHz, 8MHz and 16MHz Panasonic

Channelization in Japan March 2012 Channelization in Japan Unlicensed band at 916.5-927.5MHz in TGah, but 920-928MHz and 950-958MHz in 15.4g and 950-958MHz in 15.4-2011. The overlapped 920-927.5MHz is studied here. Reasonably Matched Panasonic

Channelization in China March 2012 Channelization in China Unlicensed band at 755-787MHz in TGah, but 470-510MHz and 779-787MHz in 15.4g and 314-316MHz, 430-434MHz and 779-780 MHz in 15.4-2011. The overlapped 779-787MHz is studied here. Reasonably Matched Panasonic

Channelization in Europe March 2012 Channelization in Europe Unlicensed band at 863-868MHz in TGah, but 863-870MHz in 15.4g and 868-868.6MHz in 15.4-2011. The overlapped 863-868MHz is studied here. 0.025MHz Shifted, but may be not significant to 1MHz and above bandwidth Panasonic

Channelization in USA (3) March 2012 Channelization in USA (3) Tradeoff between coexistence and more channel assignment 1 MHz difference between TGah 2MHz and 15.4g 2MHz 1MHz Panasonic

USA Channelization Proposal March 2012 USA Channelization Proposal Channelization proposal based on 11-12-0108-00-00ah-channel-considerations-for-smart-grid, is shown as follows 1MHz BW channels are unchanged 2MHz BW channels are shifted to right by 1MHz, and the last channel is removed 4MHz and above BW channels are shifted to left by 1MHz 902 MHz 928 MHz 2 MHz 4 MHz 8 MHz 16 MHz 1 MHz Panasonic

Conclusions Two typical scenarios for TGah coexistence presented. March 2012 Conclusions Two typical scenarios for TGah coexistence presented. Several potential PHY and MAC technical topics for coexistence mechanism listed. More investigations and discussions are necessary. A quick comparison between TGah Channelization proposal and 15.4/15.4g Channelization is done for each country. As a result, the TGah proposal for some countries may be reviewed in order to achieve a simple but effective coexistence mechanism. PHY and MAC designing shall take coexistence assurance into consideration. Panasonic
