Presented by: Margaret Iregi & Enock Biamah. REHABILITATION OF KINDARUMA FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM USING INTERNAL CAPACITY Presented by: Margaret Iregi & Enock Biamah. 2018 G2G GLOBAL INNOVATION SEMINAR, Pride Inn Paradise Beach Hotel – Mombasa. 18th - 22nd June 2018

Conclusion & Way Forward Presentation Outline Introduction Implemented Solution Problem Statement Conclusion & Way Forward Cost Benefit Analysis

Kindaruma Power Station 1.0 Introduction Kindaruma Power Station

1.1 Introduction Generates High Voltages making it Most Vulnerable equipment to fire risks. Its given high priority in protection against fire risks.

Generator Fire Protection System 1.2 Introduction Generator Fire Protection System Protection scheme comprising of heat sensors, smoke sensors, carbon dioxide gas cylinders and control system with periphery devices. This system automatically put off Generator fire upon detection

2.0 Problem Statement Fire protection was installed in 1999 with Generators 1 & 2 using a common centralized control unit and fire suppression system. 1 2 Common controller broke down in 2016 and OEM (Notifier UK) was contacted. 3 They advised on Complete Systems Rehabilitation using their latest generator fire protection. . 3 Quoted Cost for rehabilitation was too high and Management opted for an open tendering process

2.1 Problem Statement Tendering Masinga and Kindaruma were facing the same challenge The tender was advertised for both Power Stations on 23rd November 2016 Bids were opened on 23rd January 2017 and three contractors submitted their bids.   Name of bidder Amount (Ksh.) 1. Bid 1 14,685,600.00 2. Bid 2 61,389,601.20 3. Bid 3 104,276,584.12

2.1 Problem Statement Bidder Number 2 was the lowest Compliant bidder. Item no. Description Cost (Ksh.) 1.  Total for Schedule 1 Masinga 29,599,314.00 2.  Total for Schedule 2 Kindaruma 31,790,287.20 Grand Total 61,389,601.20 Due to budget constraints the Contractor was awarded Schedule 1 Project. Top Management challenged EH team to carry out Kindaruma works

Materials acquisition 3.0 Solution Project Execution A team of Mechanical and Electrical staff was formed. It was mandate to carry out the following tasks: Design Work Installation Works Materials acquisition Commissioning

3.1 Design

Design Work Smoke Sampling Pipes.

Design Work Smoke Detectors

Design Work Strobes and Buzzers for audio Visual Alert.

Design Work Fire Protection Control Unit (SHP) Microprocessor based unit configured for a wide range fire protection applications. Primary inputs are Smoke while Secondary inputs are Thermal. Outputs. Audible and visual fire alarms. Machine emergency stop . Release of fire suppression gas.

Fire Suppression System Design Work Outputs Fire Suppression System Consists of carbon dioxide gas cylinders inter-connected together by high pressure hoses. Hoses are connected to carbon dioxide distribution pipe known as Manifold. The first carbon dioxide cylinder is equipped with a CO2 puncturing solenoid which is referred to as a pilot CO2 cylinder.

Material Acquisition & Installation Major Items were sourced from Kamburu & Kiambere Other materials were procured locally The installation works took a total of six weeks Installation Mounting Cabling Wiring Fabrication Testing & Commissioning

Installation Work Cabling and fixation of smoke sampling pipes.

Installation Work Mounting of sensing and alarming devices

Installation Work Wiring of control relays Wiring of vesda control units

Installation Work Fabrication of fire suppression unit Wiring of gas releasing solenoid on the fabricated suppression unit.

Installation Work Kindaruma Fire System Central Controller New SHP panel Old Notifier panel

Testing & Commissioning Functional checks for the various systems Equipment was then subjected to a live test. Puncturing of Co2 gas cylinders Machine shutdown was witnessed by simulation of smoke to the fire protection system

LIVE TEST

4.0 Cost Benefit Analysis Project Cost Comparison JOH-JHO836-20070312-KT-P1 4.0 Cost Benefit Analysis Project Cost Comparison Costs KenGen Project Costs (Ksh.) Contractor’s Bid (Ksh.) Installation Works 5,581,800 18,718,733 Training 63,093 Certification 105,800 Total   5,687,600 18,781,826 Project Savings 13,051,026

4.1 Benefits Project took advantage of another Scheduled Outage (Intake Gate Rehabilitation) thus saving the Company a further Ksh.21,000,000 in Capacity Revenue. Built internal capacity (on job training) and improved employee morale By use of Internal Capacity, the Company realized saving of Ksh. 34,051,026 (Through Project Savings and Capacity Revenue)

5.0 Conclusion & Way Forward 5.1 Challenges Materials procurement - Delays in delivery of Materials. Challenges since we were working on untested waters.

5.1 Lessons Learnt 1 With team work, proper planning and determination you can beat any challenge. 3 KenGen has well skilled and capable personnel to undertake challenging projects. 2 Using old fire protection manuals the team perfected in design and installation of the project.

Standardization of fire protection system in the Company. 5.2 Recommendations Continuous specialized training to assist the team in sustaining systems Standardization of fire protection system in the Company. Management to Approve funds to install similar Systems in other Stations Maintenance of existing fire protection systems in the company.
