Lesson: Digestive System

All living things are made up of cells. Food has to be broken down before it is transported to every cell.

Our digestive system breaks down food and absorbs it so it can be transported around our bodies.

Parts of our digestive system mouth oesophagus liver stomach pancreas large intestine small intestine

Parts of our digestive system mouth where food is chewed and mixed with saliva

Parts of our digestive system oesophagus the tube that carries food to the stomach

Parts of our digestive system stomach stores food and mixes it with digestive juices

Parts of our digestive system small intestine the tube where broken down food is absorbed into the blood

Parts of our digestive system large intestine passes water back into the blood leaving solid waste

Parts of our digestive system pancreas makes digestive enzymes

Parts of our digestive system liver makes bile which helps to break down fats

What is the function of each part? mouth oesophagus liver stomach pancreas large intestine small intestine

Nutrition involves 5 stages. Ingestion Digestion Absorption Assimilation Egestion

Teeth break down food into smaller pieces (physical digestion)

There are four types of teeth. Upper or maxillary teeth Lower or mandibular teeth Incisors Canines Premolars Molars

Molars Premolars Incisors Canines

Teeth Incisors Canines Premolars Molars

Teeth Incisors – cut food Canines – tear food Premolars – grind food Molars – grind food

Review Questions: Label each part. E A F B C G D

Question to think about Enzymes are involved in chemical digestion. What do you think this means? Enzymes act here!
