SILVER TRAINING CAMPCRAFT DUKE OF EDINBURGH HILLARY AWARD

CAMPCRAFT Check your selected spot Flat, well-drained and protected from wind Are there pathways in and out of camp? Familiarise yourself with the route to toilets in case you need them during the night Create defined areas for cooking, communal activities etc

CAMPCRAFT – IMPROVISING A CAMPSITE Open ground or a pine forest (sheltered open ground) Check map for suitable flat areas big enough for your party Feel comfortable about your choice of campsite Don't destroy vegetation (bend branches out of the way if necessary) Use what you have and natural features to create shelter especially if you don't have tents Leave no trace

CAMPCRAFT – ARRIVING AT NIGHT If you know you will arrive at night - try arranging your pack earlier in the day so everything you need is to hand Have a head torch handy Make sure you have time for a hot meal If unplanned - discuss what went wrong and how to avoid this next time

CAMPCRAFT – STAYING IN HUTS Always buy your hut tickets before you go (DOC offices, Dwights, Lower Hutt Information Office) Some huts cost more than one ticket per person Always fill in the required portion of the ticket and place it in the box in the hut. Tie the remaining portion to your pack. Always leave the hut cleaner than you found it. Bring in more wood to replace any you use. Be considerate of other hut users
