CORRIDOR MONITORING ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL

WHAT IS CORRIDOR MONITORING? Inspection of lands owned by the National Park Service(NPS) managed by the Appalachian Trail Park Office(ATPO). Documenting and reporting activities or incidents inconsistent with NPS regulation. Maintaining property boundary markings. Establish friendly relationships with neighboring property owners.

THE USE OF MAP AND COMPASS IS A KEY SKILL FOR CORRIDOR MONITORS.

PROPERTY BOUNDARIES ARE MARKED BY OFFICIAL SIGNS.

MONUMENTS MARK ALL PROPERTY CORNERS AND ARE POSITIONED ALONG THE BOUNDARY LINE.

MONUMENT HEADS ARE STAMPED WITH LOCATION INFORMATION.

SURVEYORS MAPS PROVIDE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM ONE MONUMENT TO ANOTHER.

A QUADRANT COMPASS IS USED TO FOLLOW THE BOUNDARY.

WITNESS MAPS PROVIDE INFORMATION FOR LOCATING MONUMENTS.

THE BOUNDARY DOES NOT FOLLOW A CLEARED TRAIL AND CROSSES OVER VARIED TERRAIN..

BOUNDARIES MAY ALSO PASS BY RESIDENTIAL AREAS.

MONITORS REPORT ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES ON THE CORRIDOR.
