Current Events- U.S.-China Trade War Boosts Fast-Growing Southeast Asia Foreign primary production are moving out to ASEAN countries, because of U.S.- China trade war Last fall the Chinese acoustics manufacturer Goertek announced that its production of Apple’s Airpods wireless headphones will move to Vietnam, because of the trade war. A survey of U.S. firms manufacturing in China found that 18.5% had either moved production to Southeast Asia or were considering it. Another reason to move to south-east asia is because the Labour cost is can run as low as one-third to one-half those in China. New factories, new technological application inside the factor (Automation), more efficient. ASEAN countries will be working with and learning about advanced technology, and more prosperous societies creating in-country consumer demand.

Advantages/Disadvantages Elimination of Tariffs between members More access to goods Easier travel between regions More job opportunity Greater political independence in the region Disadvantages Reduced tariffs have negatively impacted poorer ASEAN countries such as Thailand's agricultural sector due to a greater number of imported agricultural goods. Faced criticism for not protecting small and medium enterprises and for being reluctant to promote human rights and democracy
