The North American Study for the Treatment of Refractory Ascites Arun J. Sanyal, Chris Genning, K.Rajender Reddy, Florence Wong, Kris V. Kowdley, Kent Benner, Timothy McCashland  Gastroenterology  Volume 124, Issue 3, Pages 634-641 (March 2003) DOI: 10.1053/gast.2003.50088 Copyright © 2003 American Gastroenterological Association Terms and Conditions

Fig. 1 The hazard of recurrence of tense ascites requiring therapeutic paracentesis despite ongoing active medical treatment with sodium restriction and stepped-care diuretic use for patients managed with medical therapy and TP versus medical therapy; TP and TIPS is shown in the form of a Kaplan–Meier curve. TIPS was associated with significantly better control of ascites (P < 0.0001; Wilcoxon test) with a lower rate of recurrence of tense ascites compared with TP. The number of subjects at risk in each arm is shown below the figure. Fig. 2 The hazard of mortality in the 2 treatment arms is shown in the form of a Kaplan–Meier curve. The mortality rates in the 2 arms were virtually identical and not significantly different. The number of subjects at risk in each arm is shown below the figure.
