What is the Matter?

Matter Warm up – Name 5 things in your classroom that are made of matter. Did you forget Air?

Matter How did you know that all of those things were made of matter? Matter – anything that has volume and mass.

Matter What is this called? What does it measure? What unit does it use? Mass – the amount of matter something is made of.

Matter Do you know what this is? Any guesses as to what it measures? What unit does this measure in? Weight – a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object. It is measured in Newtons.

Matter What is this called? What does it measure? What unit does it measure in? Volume – the amount of space taken by an object. *Remember to measure from the meniscus.

Matter Find the volume of the following solid: Did you remember l x w x h? 6cm x 4cm x 3cm = 72cm3

Matter What if you were finding the volume of an irregular solid? What units would you use? The graduated cylinder starts at 200 mL. The graduated cylinder ends at 260 mL. What is the volume of the irregular solid? 260 mL – 200 mL = 60 mL 1mL = 1cm3 so the answer would be 60 cm3

Matter How do you think, you would find the volume of a gas? A gas can expand or contract to fit the space. It takes the shape of it’s container. You would just measure the container!

Matter Mass and Volume So……. What are two properties that all matter have? Mass and Volume
