11b. Why did Brigham Young move the Mormon community to Utah Brigham Young moved the Mormons to Utah because they were escaping religious persecution. They were not accepted in the Midwest (Illinois, Ohio, etc). People and local governments were threatening to exterminate them. Brigham Young thought that Utah would be a safe place to worship. He wanted to start a Mormon community where they are free to be Mormons. 11C. What are some possible problems that might result from Americans settling in the West? Some problems that might happen include getting diseases, encountering hostile Natives, enforcing laws from across the country, eventually opportunities will for free land will disappear, and fighting over land.

12 a. Who were Stephen F. Austin and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna? Stephen F. Austin was the leader of the first American settlement in Texas. He helped the first three hundred American families settle into free lands in Texas. They had to convert to Catholicism and had to pledge loyalty to Mexico. After he settled there with the “Old Three Hundred”, many other people also became attracted to Texas and started moving there, especially Americans. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna eventually became the president of Mexico. Before he was president, he promised that Texas would become more independent and control American immigration into Texas. But when he became president, he ruled as a dictator who tried to control everything. So Texas rebelled and gained its independence by capturing him and forcing him to sign a treaty.

12 b. Why did settlers in Texas rebel against Mexican rule? They rebelled because Santa Anna became a dictator and wanted to control over everything even though he had promised that Texas would become more independent when he became president. They also rebelled after the Mexican government stopped allowing new American settlements in Texas. 12C. In what ways was the Texas struggle for independence similar to American independence? The Texan army and American armies were both outnumbered by the enemy and were not professional armies. They both had to fight for freedom to govern. Both were trying to fight against controlling rulers. Both were fighting for land.
