Evidence of Continental Drift and Sea Floor Spreading

11/14/2013 Warm Up What is a one word synonym for Pangaea? What is continental drift? How fast does it happen? In which layer of the Earth do you find tectonic plates? Describe what the crust of the Earth looks like. Supercontinent When continents move apart. Plates move very very very slowly, only inches per year Crust/lithosphere Pangaea

If you have been absent you need to go to my website to get caught up annamarello.weebly.com Go through the powerpoints you have missed Quiz tomorrow rock cycle rock types vocab on pg 36 layers of the Earth

Attach rock cycle to the back of 31 Attach Pangaea handout to front of 37

Evidence of Continental Drift (back of 37) Page A-14-A15 YELLOW Evidence of Continental Drift (back of 37) Evidence Description Wegener found the same fossil from the same animal in two separate continents. This indicated that the continents were once connected. Fossils There were tropical plant fossils found in Antarctica, and fossils of ice sheets found in Africa, indicating major climate changes Climate Geology The same rock formations were found in North America and Europe, and South America and Africa suggesting the mountains split apart.

Evidence from the sea floor (front of 35) Description

Evidence Description Sea Floor Spreading Molten rock rises through the cracks and make new ocean crust Age of Sea Floor Younger rock is closer to the mid-ocean ridge; Older rock is farther away. Sea Floor Moves=Continents Move Ocean Trenches Why isn’t the Earth getting any larger? Old crust is being destroyed at the same speed new crust is made.
