Volcanoes

Volcano Opening in the Earth’s crust where magma is released as lava. Have three types of flow: lava, gaseous & mud

Volcano Found at subduction zones, divergent boundaries, and over hot spots.

Impacts to Earth Volcanic ash can block out the sunlight for days, even weeks Ash will blanket land

Impacts to Earth Extreme heated gases can kill anything in its path Causes numerous fires and property damage.

Volcano Cinder Cone explosive eruptions steep sided mountain

Volcano Shield Volcano quiet eruptions of basaltic lava in flat layers

Volcano Composite Volcano alternating eruptions of explosive rock, gas and ash and lava flows

Volcano Continental volcanoes – form at ocean to continent boundaries

Volcano Island arc volcano – form at ocean to ocean boundaries

Volcano Hot spot volcano – form at weak spots in the earth’s crust

2 Types of Magma Basaltic magma Granitic magma Made of basalt Low silica content therefore “runny” (not viscous) – like syrup Granitic magma Made of granite High silica content therefore “thick” (viscous) – like honey/molasses
