What are Drones? Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, are aircrafts that can be flown without a human pilot on board the aerial vehicle. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or drones, are aircrafts that can be navigated without a human pilot on board the aerial vehicle. Drones can be navigated via control from the ground, using a GPS tracking system. Some of these drones are equipped with cameras that allow the user to record and take pictures using controlled navigation. Drones are often used for the purpose of recording, some at a more professional level, however, there are many who fly drones as a hobby. Drones have grown in popularity in recent years, and new models have been released lately with newer and better features. Drone hobbyist range from skill levels, but there are drones that are tailored to beginners. Some drones are equipped with a memory card that allows the user to record their footage and upload it to their computer. Drones are navigated via their channel control and transmitter; the higher the channel control, the better the user can navigate the drone at a higher speed.

This type of drone is ideal for aerial surveys which require the capture of data over large areas. The glide structure help lessen the amount of power it needs to stay in the air. Also worth considering is the fact that fixed-wing drones are able to carry greater payloads for longer distances,  making it possible for bigger sensors as well as twin sensor configurations to be installed on the drone. The disadvantage of this kind of drone is that it is dependent on a launcher or a runway to facilitate takeoff and landing.

Two Main Types of Drones Multi-rotor drones are made of a central body and multiple rotors that power propellers to take flight and maneuver the aircraft. These usually have four rotors (quadcopter). They can take off anywhere!! Fixed-wing drones are characterized by a relatively simple structure and streamlined aerodynamics that allow for longer flight durations at higher speeds. WHAT IS DRONE MAPPING? https://blog.dronedeploy.com/choosing-the-right-mapping-drone-for-your-business-part-i-multi-rotor-vs-fixed-wing-aircraft-6ec2d02eff48

What is Drone Mapping? It is the process of using drones to capture spatial data to create a map. Spatial data refers to all types of data objects or elements that are present in a geographical space https://blog.dronedeploy.com/choosing-the-right-mapping-drone-for-your-business-part-i-multi-rotor-vs-fixed-wing-aircraft-6ec2d02eff48 http://www.globaltroxler.ca/blog/2017/10/11/drones-fixed-vs-rotary/

Benefits of Drone Mapping? Better Quality Images and Data collection. Low cost Time efficient Longer flight time to capture more data Easy to setup drones to do mapping Easier to map difficult terrain/remote areas https://www.airbornedrones.co/surveying-and-mapping/

APPLICATIONS OF DRONE MAPPING https://www.airbornedrones.co/surveying-and-mapping/

Guyana For the Wapichana community living in a remote village in southern Guyana, drones are used as a powerful tool against the threats of mining and deforestation. Drones are deployed as aerial monitors can cut risks faced by those exploring the area. The drones can monitor remote areas from above, and provide images back to the monitoring team's computer in real-time.

Panama This technology, as a whole, allows the consolidation of a surveillance system in areas with active dynamics, as it will provide information in real time, reliable, easy to process and practically independent of climatic conditions, which allows: 1. monitoring of areas with continuous cloud permanence; 2. economically efficient monitoring of inaccessible areas and/or areas with little visual coverage; 3. easy learning and generation of reliable results; 4. empowering communities to use the tool from their own capacities, since it can be monitored when needed; and 5. optimizing surveillance: the evidence gathered can be useful for legal proceedings. © FAO/T Hernandez E-agriculture in Action: Drones for Agriculture 97 Drones for community monitoring of forests The drone model chosen for this project is the “Fixed-wing drone model E384” from Event 38 Unmanned Systems. This model was chosen for being easy to use, easy to repair and very light, and can cover long distances in a single flight. This model also makes it possible to carry out, specifically, flight plans and post-processing for the monitoring of the earth.

Dominica The World Food Programmes is participating in assessment efforts to determine the impacts of Hurricanes Maria and Irma, estimated to have severely damaged or destroyed as much as 90% of Dominica’s built structures. UAVs slide under the cloud cover and capture high resolution imagery that will prove vital to recovery and rebuilding. https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2018/march/19/drones-map-devastated-dominica
