Dealing With Great Britain Main Ideas The Proclamation of 1763 was designed to keep the peace with Native Americans, keep colonists near British authority, and control expansion and trade. Britain taxed the colonies to help pay the costs of the French and Indian War. The Sugar Act lowered the tax on imported molasses in order to stop smuggling. Colonists believed the Sugar Act and other laws violated their rights.

New Taxes on the Colonies Main Ideas The Stamp Act in 1765 taxed almost all printed materials, such as newspapers, wills, and playing cards. It was repealed in 1766. The Sons of Liberty formed to protest the Stamp Act. The Daughters of Liberty formed to boycott British goods and urge separation from Britain. The Townshend Acts were passed in 1767 and taxed various goods for the administration and control of the colonies. 2
